Pre-existing Conditions

John Malpede

Pre-Existing Conditions (1997), takes place in the slowed down, altered- state of convalescence during recovery from surgery and metaphorically explores states of isolation, release, birth and death . There is very little text in this piece. The narrative of Pre-Existing Conditions is revealed through small changes in extremely careful, deliberate bodily movement and the flow of emotions in the performer's face . Music captures the mood and contributes misleading, but ultimately appropriate, associations. A "pre-existing condition” is an insurance industry term for a class of illnesses they won't cover.
